If you’re into running then, this marathon is surely on your bucket list. And if it’s not then it is going to be. The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, also known as the Everest Base Camp Marathon is the highest marathon in the world that has been going on since 2003.

It’s a true adventure in every sense. Besides the fact that running a marathon is hard, doing it at altitude is, even more, challenging – but not impossible. With proper training and sufficient acclimatization days, it’s more than possible to do one of the hardest and most beautiful runs in the world. So – are you up for it?

Itinerary:

DAY 1 - Arrival in Kathmandu
Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel.

DAY 2 - Kathmandu
After breakfast, embark on a half-day sightseeing tour of the city. You’ll also visit an ancient religious structure called Swayambhunath located west of the city.

DAY 3 - Lukla
Transfer to the airport in Kathmandu and fly to Lukla.

DAY 4 - Namche
Get ready for your first trek. Your first destination will be the village of Namche, located at 3,440 meters. It’s a popular stopping place for altitude acclimatization and is also the gateway to Himalaya.

DAY 5 - Namche
Free day to explore the village on your own. This day is for relaxing and letting your body get used to the altitude.

DAY 6 - Khumjung
Get ready for your trek to Khumjung. Khumjung is a village located at 3,970 meters and is home to a monastery with a Yeti scalp kept in it.

DAY 7 - Deboche
Make the trek to Deboche, located at 3, 734 meters. Your route will take you over the Thyangboche Hill.

DAY 8 - Dingboche
Your trek will take you to Dingboche at 4,530 meters. This is also a popular stopping place for trekkers heading to Mount Everest or other mountains in the area.

DAY 9 - Dingboche
Free day for relaxing and acclimatization.

DAY 10 - Lobuche
Trek to Lobuche at 4,940 meters, a small village near Mount Everest. This is one of the last places with lodging on the trail to Everest Base Camp.

DAY 11 - Gorakshep
Trek to Gorakshep, a small village on the edge of the Gorakshep lakebed. The village is located at 5,164 meters and is the original base camp for Mount Everest.

DAY 12 - Gorakshep
You will stay in Gorakshep for another night to let your body adjust to the altitude. You will have an early morning trek to Kalapatthar Viewpoint that has one of the best views of the actual summit of Mount Everest.

DAY 13 - Mount Everest Base Camp
Trek to Mount Everest Base Camp at 5,364 and join the other runners getting ready for the marathon.

DAY 14 - Mount Everest Base Camp
Free day to rest before the marathon and let your body get used to the altitude.

DAY 15 - Marathon Day
This is your day! The marathon will take you from an altitude of 5,364 meters down to 3,446 meters. By the end of the day, you have participated in the world’s highest marathon.

DAY 16 - Namche
Rest in the morning and in the afternoon, get ready for your trek to Monjo, at 2,835 meters. It’s a small village on the route and a place to rest.

DAY 17 - Lukla
It’s time to trek back to Lukla. Rest of the day is free to relax or explore your surroundings.

DAY 18 - Kathmandu
Transfer to the airport in Lukla to fly back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel.

DAY 19 - Kathmandu
Free day to explore Kathmandu on your own.

DAY 20 - Departure from Kathmandu
Transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
