Europe is filled with great marathons, small and big alike. Smaller marathons can be held literally anywhere, whereas the massive ones usually concentrate in metropolitan areas of major European cities. If you’re aiming for the biggest of the big, here's the list of the 2015-2016 largest marathons in Europe.
1. Marathon de Paris Marathon de Paris had had a whopping 41 801 finishers in 2016, with more than 40 % international runners as registrants. The next edition is held on the 9th of April 2017.
2. Virgin London Marathon Virgin London Marathon is the biggest charity event in the world. It had around 39 200 finishers in 2016. The next race is the 23rd of April 2017.
3. Berlin Marathon In 2015 Berlin Marathon had nearly 28 000 finishers for the marathon distance. The next Berlin Marathon is organised on the 25th of September 2016.
4. Marató Barcelona In 2016, a total of 16 506 runners reached the finish line at Zurich Marató Barcelona. The next Barcelona Marathon will be held on the 12th of March 2017.
5. Maraton Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP A total of 14 088 finishers the Valencia Marathon in 2015, and the Spanish race will be organized again on the 20th of November with a new Gold Label of IAAF.
6. Maratona di Roma The marathon of beautiful Rome had a total of 13 881 finishers in 2016. The next edition in the Italian capital will be held . The 23rd edition will be held on the 2nd of April 2017.
7. Frankfurt Marathon A total of 13 662 runners finished Frankfurt Marathon in 2015. The next edition of Frankfurt Marathon will take place on October 30th 2016.
8. Dublin Marathon Dublin Marathon has been arranged for over 35 years with steady success. It gathered 12 938 finishers together in its 2015 edition. The next Dublin Marathon will be on Sunday October 30th 2016.
9. Marathon Rotterdam The 2016 edition of Rotterdam Marathon had 12 814 finishers. The 2017 event will take place on the 9th of April.
10. Amsterdam Marathon The Dutch capital marathon had 12 359 finishers in 2015, and will host the next edition of Amsterdam Marathon on the 16th of October 2016.
11. Marathon Hamburg The event hosted a little over 12 000 participants in 2016 in its 31st edition. The 2017 event date is yet to be announced.
12. Athens Marathon Athens Marathon. The Authentic is run the on the original marathon route from Marathon to Athens, and the event's popularity grows year by year. In 2015 it had just a little over 11 800 finishers. In 2016 Athens Marathon will be held on November 13th.
13. Brighton Marathon Brighton Marathon is the second largest marathon in the UK and had approximately 11 000 finishers in 2016. The 2017 Marathon Weekend takes place between the 7th and 9th of April.
14. Rock 'n' Roll Madrid Marathon Spain’s second largest marathon in 2016, the capital's marathon hosted a little over 10 000 finishers. The next edition's date will be announced soon.
15. Stockholm Marathon Scandinavia's largest, Stockholm Marathon had approximately 9 500 finishers in 2016. The 2017 date is yet to be announced.
16. Copenhagen Marathon 8 371 runners finished Copenhagen Marathon in 2016. In 2017 Copenhagen Marathon is held in May, as always.
17. Firenze Marathon The second biggest marathon in Italy after Maratona de Roma is Firenze Marathon with 8 275 in 2015. The race will be run again in November 2016.
18. Marathon du Medoc The infamous wine marathon, Marathon du Medoc in France, had 7553 finishers in 2015. The 2016 edition is going to be on September 10th.
19. Warsaw Marathon Warsaw Marathon has been one of the fastest growing marathons with more than 6800 finishers in 2015. The next Warsaw Marathon is run on the 25th of September 2016.
20. Edinburgh Marathon Edinburgh Marathon is Scotland's largest running festival with 6592 marathon finishers in 2016. Next Edinburgh Marathon is held on May 27th and 28th 2017.
